Quail Forever (QF) is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of quail, pheasant and other upland wildlife through habitat improvement, public awareness, education and advocacy for sound land management policy.
QF was started in the summer of 2005 by its parent organization, Pheasants Forever (PF), to address the continuing loss of habitat suitable for quail and the subsequent quail population decline. Bobwhite population losses over the last 25 years range from 60 to 90 percent across the country. The reason for the quail population plunge is simple - massive losses of habitat suitable for quail. There are five major factors leading to the losses of quail habitat; intensified farming and forestry practices, succession of grassland ecosystems to forests, overwhelming presence of exotic grasses like fescue that choke out wildlife, and urban sprawl.
At the heart of QF and PF is the unique grassroots system of fundraising and project development that allows members to see the direct result of their contributions. QF and PF empower chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent - the only national conservation organization that operates through this truly grassroots structure. As a result, chapter volunteers are able to see the fruits of their efforts locally, while belonging to a larger national organization with a voice on federal and state conservation policy.
QF and PF members are a diversified group of hunters, non-hunters, farmers, ranchers, landowners, conservation enthusiasts and wildlife officials. QF and PF are for those who want to make a difference for wildlife by creating habitat, restoring wetlands and protecting prairies.
There are more than 100 QF chapters in the U.S. accounting for over 7,000 members and more than 635 PF chapters across the U.S. and Canada accounting for over 120,000 members.
Habitat Projects - The system of empowering local chapters and volunteers to make the best decisions for wildlife in their local area has resulted in the average annual completion of over 20,000 projects. Since its inception in 1982, Pheasants Forever's wildlife habitat projects have benefited more than 5.3 million acres across the continent. In that time, PF has participated in over 1,000 different land acquisitions totaling well over 100,000 acres. Those land acquisition projects have been completed in conjunction with local, state and federal natural resource agencies, and all of those projects are today open to public hunting.
Habitat Conservation Advocacy - Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever's mission is directly tied to a strong framework of federal conservation programs. Authority for critical conservation programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program and the Wetlands Reserve Program, is granted by the U.S. Congress in the Federal Farm Bill's Conservation Title. In total, federal farm conservation programs allow us to manage nearly 50 million acres for wildlife habitat.
Habitat Conservation Education - Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever have developed programs and materials that promote education and public awareness, including:
The Leopold Education Project - An award-winning conservation education curriculum based on Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac.
Whistlers and Ringnecks - Youth programs that introduce thousands of young people to the outdoors every year.
Although we're extremely proud of the work we have accomplished, we realize that when your work is conservation, the work is never-ending. We invite you to join in our quest to ensure a country rich in natural resources and long on people willing to work to preserve them. After all, natural resources - quail, pheasants, and the land, air and water on which they live - are our greatest resources.
